About
Runaway Bay Junior Rugby League Football Club
The Runaway Bay Junior Rugby League Football Club was established in 1974 after a handful of locals met at the old Runaway Day shopping centre to form a club for kids to play sport. In 1975 under the guidance of Wayne Overton, Jim Harrison and Merv Mitchell Runaway Bay had three teams (U/9, U/12 & U/14) compete in the Brisbane competition. There was no Club house just a Ute and a trailer to sell food and raise money for jerseys and equipment.
By 1977 the Gold Coast had formed its own competition. Runaway Bay supported seven teams from U7- U/15. In those days there was a competition for U/7s which Runaway Bay won. That team went on to win the next 5 premierships. The team was coached by Ken Peace and included ex NRL and State of Origin player Brett Horsnell. Brett now has 2 sons playing at Runaway Bay. This team set a tradition that hundreds of proud youngsters have followed over the years at Runaway Bay. Many players from the original Bay teams now have kids playing at Runaway Bay.
In 1981 the Club facilities were sparse but with support of the Gold Coast City Council, local businesses and the tireless efforts of the Club’s various Presidents and committee persons a Leagues Club was built. Gone were the tent and booze van. In its place was a modern Kitchen and fully licensed Club House.
Special mention must be made of the Bycroft Family in establishing the Club and providing continued support.
